Revamp Puppets

A few of the puppets used in various programmes, taken from a page of Captain Scarlet: The Vault.

As well as the main character puppets in each of Gerry Anderson's super-marionated programmes, several Multiple Duty Puppets, also known as the Revamp Puppets, were given a number and used as guest star or background characters. These puppets had the duty of more than one character, as well as having its character's voices provided into different styles by different actors.

Certain details on those puppets, like hair and/or eye colouring and wardrobe, were altered to differentiate the characters the puppets represented in those programmes from the characters for whom they had originally been sculpted. This, comparable to the actors in live-action repertory companies acting out different characters for each production, was one of various methods Anderson's company, then called Century 21 Television and Cinema Productions, employed to keep their production costs reduced.

One particular example of this technique was the usage of the Captain Scarlet puppet, but with brown hair instead of Captain Scarlet's black hair and the addition of eye-glasses to his face, as the character of Paul Blake in The Secret Service, which programme was the only Anderson production either to combine super-marionation with live action or be situated in the present day. It also enabled Captain Scarlet fanon to equate Paul Blake with the grandfather of Captain Scarlet on his mother's side.

Puppets[]

NOTE: Some of these puppets in the instalments also made cameos in flashbacks, had no dialogue, made background cameos and only made a single appearance.

After Captain Scarlet[]

The Anderson spouses, as they then were, produced only two other known super-marionation programmes, Joe 90 and The Secret Service, after Captain Scarlet was cancelled, and the Multiple Duty/Revamp Puppets were employed in those programmes as well.

Trivia[]

  • According to Captain Scarlet: The Vault, Captain Magenta's puppet was also listed as Multiple Duty Puppet #9, despite being one of the main characters..
